More Flavor: Lecture A Cyclist's History of New York

As chaotic and challenging as the city is for cyclists, people on two wheels have been darting in and out of NYC traffic since before internal-combustion engines. Believe it or not, bikes were considered decadent and immoral when they were first introduced — eventually, they became so popular that they revolutionized personal transport as much as gas-powered cars did a few decades later. Tonight, historian David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History, presents a vivid overview of biking in New York since the bicycle's invention in the early 1800s, highlighting court cases, technological advances, and social developments that made Gotham the cycling mecca it is today.
