- Joint Security Area (2000)
There's no tongue slicing, incest, or eating of live octopi, but Park Chan-wook's Joint Security Area is no less gripping than his infamous Oldboy (2003). Set in the Korean Demilitarized Zone separating the south from the north, JSA is a politically biting murder mystery that highlights the paradoxes of Korean national identity — not just those that arise between the DPRK and the ROK, but also those of the Korean diaspora. The protagonist is an ethnically Korean Swiss lawyer who struggles to understand the intricacies of her ancestral homeland; the movie struck a nerve when it was initially released, becoming the most commercially successful South Korean film ever.
