Film Forum says…

At its core, Jean-Luc Godard's Masculine Feminine is a simple boy-meets-girl tragedy, with Jean-Pierre Léaud as the pensive boy and yé-yé star Chantal Goya as the narcissistic girl. But Godard takes it somewhere else entirely. True to its title, the film parses sex through the eyes of confused, passionate Parisian youths, exploring their attitude toward love, art, and politics in the era of "James Bond and Vietnam." While the film maintains a guns-and-girls tone (pistol blasts separate the film's 15 acts), its intimate personal exchanges and lovely verité footage of 1965 Paris stoke the modern desire for life to be art.
