Shakespeare's tale of murder and madness hasn't been staged at the Delacorte Theater since 1975, when Sam Waterston played the title role, but it's been well worth the wait. Oskar Eustis tackles Hamlet with characteristic bravado, while injecting an unexpected playfulness and eliciting many an audience giggle along the way. Eustis has found an outstanding accomplice in Michael Stuhlbarg, whose initially lighthearted portrayal of the fallen prince gives way to a heartbreaking descent into madness. The rest of the cast is also top-notch, with Andre Braugher chewing some of the impressive scenery as Claudius, Lauren Ambrose as a sympathetic Ophelia, and Waterston himself, returning after 33 years to play Polonius.
