More Flavor: Discussion On the Waterfront and the Catholic Labor Priests

On the Waterfront is a gritty look at New York's mafia-controlled ports of the 1940s. The film, starring Marlon Brando as a boxer-turned-longshoreman who becomes a reluctant informant, swept the Oscars in 1954. Writer Budd Schulberg based the script on the Pulitzer Prize-winning series "Crime on the Waterfront" as well as real-life labor priest John Corridan; though it deals with great social issues such as violence and poverty, Waterfront is also a vivid portrait of a cultural community at a historical crossroads. Tonight, Schulberg joins Fordham professor James T. Fisher to view selections from the film and discuss the subculture it depicts.
