Abigail Washburn's Sparrow Quartet are stacked with ringers. As in her other group, the old-timey Uncle Earl, Washburn's clawhammer banjo and high, clear soprano are front and center, but with the soulful cellist/vocalist Ben Sollee, Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen, and incomparable banjoist Béla Fleck, Sparrow Quartet traffic more heavily in virtuosic solos. In the group's new recording, Washburn continues to explore a blend of Appalachian and Chinese music. The Sparrow Quartet tour China regularly, and when you see them playing the Beijing Olympics this summer, you can say you caught their show back before the whole world knew about them.
