When bug-eyed boys mace each other on MTV, they're jackasses, but when Chris Burden's studio assistant shoots him in the arm, it's art. The distinction is one of context as much as substance; as with the work of several other establishment-subverting artists in JACK*%SS, Burden's 1971 performance was undertaken as the sands of contemporary art shifted underfoot, as well as in the midst of an unpopular war. Susan Inglett's exhibition of stunt-based film and video pieces also showcases Vito Acconci, Marina Abramovic, Sophie Calle, and the Viennese Actionists, all of whom use physical movement as raw material for performances that are as much spectacles as they are art.
