Although Jersey-born William Basie and his musical cohorts were based in Kansas City and Chicago throughout most of the Depression, New Yorkers were just as thirsty for the Count's rollicking big-band swing as the rest of the battered nation. When Basie and his orchestra made the move to NYC, it was a homecoming of sorts — the iconic jazz pianist cut his teeth in Harlem more than a decade earlier. Tonight, Roxane Orgill, author of Dream Lucky: When FDR Was in the White House, Count Basie Was on the Radio, and Everyone Wore a Hat, discusses the ways in which the Big Apple shaped this legendary American musician.
