Battery Maritime Building
10 South St
From the man who once danced with a lamp comes another animation of the inanimate. In conjunction with Creative Time, David Byrne creates a monumental sound installation in the 9,000-square-foot Battery Maritime Building. In Playing the Building, an antique organ activates a collection of mechanical devices fastened to the edifice's infrastructure. Audience members are invited to play the organ, filling the building with spontaneous compositions of vibrating beams, plumbing, and electric appliances. The cavernous space becomes, in effect, an instrument meting out taps, whirs, and bass vibrations; it's not quite as melodic as Byrne's previous musical endeavors, but it's just as mesmerizing.
