Performing Arts: Theatre Boeing Boeing

It takes an exceptional director and a brilliant cast to transform a frivolous film with an old-fashioned plot into a satisfying spectacle — and, miraculously, that's just the case with Boeing Boeing. Director Matthew Warchus takes Marc Camoletti's 1960s French farce over the proverbial top, with a wink and a nod at every juncture. The West Wing's Bradley Whitford plays a libidinous bachelor in Paris who successfully juggles affaires de coeur with three foxy air hostesses. Enter his old buddy visiting from Wisconsin (Englishman Mark Rylance in a riotous turn) and chaos ensues. That's pretty much it — but the simple plot allows stewardesses Gina Gershon, Kathryn Hahn, and especially Mary McCormack to shine.
