Music: Rock/Pop Pelican w/ Priestbird and the Austerity Program

For Chicago's Pelican, the term "instru-metal" seems more reductive by the day. No, there are no vocals. Yes, there are metal influences. Certainly, the drummer's a graduate of the Bonham school of whomp-and-thud. And of course they love them some monster stoner-rock riffage. But last year's City of Echoes complicates the formula considerably: The songs are shorter. The leads, cleaner and more melodic, grab hold more quickly. The hooks land harder. Even the acoustic non-sequiturs make more sense. A lot of like-minded bands tend to melt into a haze of drop-D knuckle-dragging and tuneless wankery, but Pelican stand apart, and we're lucky to have them here tonight.
