The Metropolitan Museum of Art says…

In association with Giorgio Armani and Vogue's Anna Wintour, curator Harold Koda of the Costume Institute investigates the distinction between costume and clothing. Superheroes delves into fashion's ability to transform and transcend, with the likes of Clark Kent, Tony Stark, and Peter Parker standing in as idealized symbols of physiological perfection. Anti-heroes, good vs evil, patriotism, politics, sexuality, and identity are all sewn into an array of movie costumes and avant-garde haute couture. Prime collisions of the dorky and cosmopolitan include Bernhard Willhelm's 2006 royal-blue dress emblazoned with Superman's red-and-yellow insignia; Thierry Mugler's motorcycle bustier with polychrome handlebars and side-view mirrors; and high-tech Nike and Speedo sportswear á la the Flash.
