The succinct comedies in this theatrical two-fer from Christopher Durang and Tom Stoppard both investigate the nature of bad dreams. Durang's The Actor's Nightmare focuses on an accountant who must deal with an impromptu career on the stage after being thrust inexplicably into a starring role. The Real Inspector Hound, on the other hand, makes use of a play-within-a-play structure to probe the complicated relationship between performer and critic while its characters solve a murder mystery. Both works question the traditional roles of actor, audience, and critic, with results that make for a cerebral and humorous double bill.
