Performing Arts: Theatre E.S.T. Marathon 2008

Ensemble Studio Theatre's festival of one-act plays is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Presenting established and emerging playwrights, the festival is usually a mixed bag, but two plays this year make it worth the trek to 11th Avenue: Neil LaBute's combative The Great War and Taylor Mac's darkly comic drama Okay. In LaBute's acerbic and witty piece, Laila Robins and Grant Shaud give excellent performances as an embittered, almost-divorced couple dividing up the remnants of their last decade together. Mac's play takes place in a bathroom at a high-school prom where the pregnant prom queen, some highly articulate coked-up girls, and a shy, closeted gay boy all grapple with the uncertainty ahead of them.
