Long before Vincent Gallo, there was Juleen Compton, one of the first filmmakers to produce, write, and star in her own film. Made in the mid-'60s, Compton's Stranded explores a common motif of the era: American expats living in Europe. The piece's protagonist is a woman in Greece who, over the course of the story, takes one step at a time into the sea as she commits suicide. Interspersed with each step are scenes from her bourgeois life of decadence and free love. Decidedly avant-garde, the film still retains an accessible narrative that vividly evokes the mood of a generation.
