Sergei Rachmaninov is one of those composers whose name evokes fiery passion and romance. In his day, however, he enjoyed popular acclaim, but little critical support. The music intelligentsia dismissed his work as old-fashioned and monotonous, even though he was one of recorded music's first stars. But the virtuoso eventually became part of every pianist's repertoire, and by the time of his death in the mid-20th century, he was regarded as one of the all-time greatest composers and performers of European classical music. Tonight, the Chamber Music Society closes its season by performing a few of the Russian-American's chamber works.
