With Noise, writer/director Henry Bean has made a feature about urban sound pollution that doesn't grate on its viewers. It's no small feat, especially given that he deploys nearly every potentially deal-breaking cinematic technique, from split-screens to montages. But this story about a New York lawyer (Tim Robbins) driven to dismantle his family and professional life to become the Rectifier, an undercover vigilante against noise pollutants, exudes a hypnotic lyricism. Characters quote Hegel, play cellos, and dwell in soothing, burnished wood interiors. They talk about real things with integrity and careful diction, and unconsciously, you convert to their cause: you want to be able to hear them think, as well.
