Following the mass exodus of the Village Voice's film writers in 2006, longtime critic Michael Atkinson rallied his departed colleagues to carry on the publication's underground spirit. The resulting book, Exile Cinema: Filmmakers at Work Beyond Hollywood, features the industry's best commentators discussing the masters of international fringe cinema. Contributors range from American University media expert Patricia Aufderheide to director Guy Maddin (The Saddest Music in the World), but selections are largely credited to onetime Voice staffers. Tonight's reading features the Ed Halter, B. Kite, and Stuart Klawans discoursing on independent filmmakers who have overcome demands for commercialization — a conflict with which these writer are intimately familiar.
