Beneath the surface of the off-kilter narrative of The Resistible Rise of Fatlinda Paloka is a clever parable about culture clash and resistance to change. Albanian immigrant Paloka runs a pizza shop in small-town Georgia, much to the dismay of the insular locals. Resenting the brash ways of the "mozzarella harpy," Jolene and Jimmy Earp verge on hysteria as they try to undermine Fatlinda and her mysteriously addictive cuisine. Throughout, Marcy Wallabout's witty farce skillfully plays with language and takes stereotypes to the extreme in the name of enlightenment. Crother Spyglass, Timothy Dowd's companion piece on this double bill, capably explores the nature of male frustration, but the evening belongs to Fatlinda.
