Anthology Film Archives says…

In Howard Hawks' Red River, which was adapted from a Saturday Evening Post story, John Wayne plays a proud, self-made cattleman who drives his herd and offbeat crew from Texas to Kansas. His my-way-or-you're-gonna-die egotism produces a mutiny on the mythic American frontier when his adopted son (Montgomery Clift in his debut) takes the reins. Though it sometimes resembles a black-and-white beef commercial (and women are nearly absent in the yee-haw fraternity), the film's irresistible Wayne-to-Clift exchanges prove that the Duke wasn't just another rugged face.
