Young mother Marcela has never had much going for her. She got pregnant young and ran away from her tyrant stepfather, and her husband has resorted to crime since they lost everything in a flood. But she does possess a resilient, undeniably carnal beauty that she matter-of-factly mines as her only resource. What Czech director Jan Hřebejk parses out, in a series of sun-dappled exteriors and appropriately claustrophobic interiors, is not whether Marcela is in any way to blame (it's a dull question, really) but whether any one person is ever solely a mark or a con. His answer is jarring enough to throw common wisdom into gloriously high relief.
