The initial response to Charlie Chaplin's Monsieur Verdoux was notoriously mixed. James Agee's superlative-laced review was the exception, as most American critics of 1947 panned the dark, ambiguous comedy. Today, the film is regarded as a masterpiece for its knotty take on the modern "monoxide world of speed and confusion." Chaplin stars as the genteel Verdoux, a "bluebeard" who marries and murders rich older women to feed his own family. With fluttering eyes and Victorian-era verse, Chaplin beautifully embodies both comedy and tragedy.
