Radio reporter Isaac Knot (Nick Stahl) was rendered a paraplegic in a car accident that killed both of his parents when he was eight. When a mysterious caller referring to herself as Ancient Chinese Girl (Vera Farmiga) tips him off to a community of "wannabes" — able-bodied people longing to be paralyzed — he's intrigued, especially once he meets her. Fiona, as she is actually named, proves to be not only lovely, but a card-carrying wannabe herself. A misbegotten, oddly matched love affair ensues — a true Quid Pro Quo that surpasses its shtick as it redefines desire and physical strength. Farmiga and Stahl, with their old-soul eyes, negotiate this potential minefield with tender candor.
