Let's face it: in the US cultural landscape, aesthetic value and social conscience coexist in cinema about as easily as Church and State do — perhaps even less so in our current political climate. The 19th Annual Human Rights Watch International Film Festival serves as a welcome reminder that movies still can prove valuable on every level. Julie Bridgham's The Sari Soldiers follows six Nepali woman fighting on opposite sides of their country's conflict. In Traces of the Trade, filmmaker Katrina Browne has the temerity to trace the roots and ancestral lines of her slave-trading family. Documentary The Dictator Hunter follows the pursuit of the nefarious former Chadian president Hissène Habré.
