In their famed modernist shorts, animators John and Faith Hubley create a world in which Miró-esque figures appear and disappear with ghostly swiftness. Tonight, MoMA's Jazz Score series presents the Hubleys' collaborations with the likes of Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, and Quincy Jones. The evening's highlights include the newly preserved Adventures of an * and The Tender Game (the latter of which is elegantly accompanied by Ella Fitzgerald's easy-on-the-ears voice). The Hubleys' images have a dreamy radiance, due in part to their syncopated scores, but more to Faith's use of "underlighting" — the practice of illuminating the animation from below.
