The real Spanish Wells is a fishing village on St. George's Cay in the Bahamas, whose founders made their fortunes by providing fresh water to Spanish ships returning to Europe. But the Creole inhabitants of Nicholas Leichter's Spanish Wells are not limited by history — the town's tale is danced to music from Claude Debussy and Amy Winehouse. Debussy's La Mer (The Sea) uses lush textures and impressionistic harmonies to describe the ocean, while modern-day siren Winehouse sings the blues — and lives them, as well. It may sound like a strange pairing, but the two complement each other and help Leichter's world premiere richly depict a unique maritime community.
