In his recent onscreen roles, Matthew Broderick bears the stunned expression of a former teen idol gone to pot. He shines best in films like Election (1999) that poke sly fun at his fallen star, but in Finding Amanda, in which he's paired with pop-tart Brittany Snow, the results prove both amusing and queasy. Broderick plays a TV writer who's managed to reform his drug addictions but not his gambling habit; Snow is his wayward niece working as a Las Vegas hooker, whom he conveniently offers to rescue. If the film never secures its tone, it does offer an excellent example of how not to conduct an intervention.
