Heeding George Orwell's declaration that sport "is war minus the shooting," the curators of The Main Event explore how love, death, and domination are enacted on the playing field. Fernando Sanchez's video 9 Fans (Super Bowl XLI Kickoff) synchronizes nine different camcorder perspectives on a football game, disorienting in a manner similar to that of frenzied war reportage. Photographers Maria Dumloa and Rob Carter uncover the imperialist undertones of professional sporting arenas, and Marisa Olson's video 96-00-04-08 reduces political struggles to the never-ending American debate: Coke or Pepsi? Part comedy, part social critique, The Main Event reminds us that winning and strength are often synonyms for subjugation and brute force.
