Anthology Film Archives says…

While the Lumières documented the quotidian proceedings of the Belle Époque, Georges Méliès made out-of-this-world shorts about space, Arabia, time travel, and the underworld. Program #1 features five of his carefully staged adventures, showcasing the cinema magician's many technical innovations: stop-motion surprises, hand-tinted prints, and delicately dissolving images. The masterpiece of his oeuvre is the sci-fi fairy tale A Trip to the Moon, which features the cut-and-paste aesthetic that inspired the Smashing Pumpkins' music video for "Tonight, Tonight." The film's famous image of a spaceship lodged in the moon's eye is on par with Buñuel and Dalí's revolutionary eye slice in Un chien andalou.
