Cinema hottie-turned-salad-dressing connosieur Paul Newman stars in this Oscar-winning drama about cattle disease, rape, and other frontier tomfoolery, inspired partly by Larry McMurtry's Horseman, Pass By. In the film's title role, Newman plays a villainous cattle rancher scrambling to deal with an outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease; the real (ahem) meat of the film, however, lies in Hud's relationships with his disapproving, heartbroken father and impressionable nephew. Patricia Neal won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Alma, the Bannon family's housekeeper, and the object of Hud's darkest desires. The black-and-white classic is projected on Bryant Park's massive outdoor screen tonight.
