An unflinching private eye. A priceless object. A mysterious woman. An inexplicable murder. These are the quintessential elements of a classic noir, and all originated in the genre's masterpiece, The Maltese Falcon. Dashiell Hammett's detective novel was originally serialized in the magazine Black Mask — the same publication that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) — but the story is likely more familiar because of its many adaptations for stage and screen. The 1941 film (the first movie based on the book was released a decade earlier) marks the beginning of director John Huston's spectacular career and created an archetype on which nearly every subsequent detective story is based.
