Ideally, all independent cinema would be queer — in the sense that it would all live outside the status quo, challenging cultural norms by its very existence. But, in a cultural moment when that's far from true, the Newfest LGBT Film Festival proves particularly worthy, as its programming highlights how people can disinherit family and political systems that exclude them, often with great glee. Don't miss Affinity, the latest adaptation of British author Sarah Waters' (Tipping the Velvet) work, as well as the melancholy film The Lost Coast, about a fateful camping trip taken by old friends.
