As a director, Howard Hawks was a jack of all trades, making everything from romantic comedies to Westerns, and in the '50s he attempted a style that was growing in popularity: the historically themed CinemaScope epic. Written by William Faulkner, Land of the Pharaohs is a fictional account of Pharaoh Khufu (Jack Hawkins), a despotic ruler who enslaves his entire kingdom to build a pyramid. The plot thickens when he enlists an architect (James Robertson Justice) and takes a wife (Joan Collins) from among his oppressed subjects. While not the most revered of Hawks' films, it's still an impressive battle- and intrigue-laden movie on par with The Ten Commandments (1956) and Ben-Hur (1959).
