The Film Society of Lincoln Center says…

The concept behind the Open Roads showcase of new Italian films probably doesn't jibe with the country's direction under recently reinstated right-wing leader Silvio Berlusconi, but it does spotlight a group of independent filmmakers that's breaking away from traditional cinema. Ferzan Ozpetek is the director most familiar to American audiences; his latest film, Saturn in Opposition, is an unhurried study of a group of thirty- and fortysomethings. Other films tackle social issues: Silvio Soldini's Days and Clouds addresses the repercussions of the slowing Italian economy; Andrea Porporati's The Sweet and the Bitter examines a young man seduced by the Mafia; and Andrea D'Ambrosio and Peppe Ruggiero's Biùtiful Cauntri tackles waste disposal in Naples.
