Like many road-trip movies, The Go-Getter is part spontaneous adventure and part journey to self-discovery. Writer/director Martin Hynes' story follows Mercer (played by Thumbsucker's doe-eyed Lou Taylor Pucci), as he drives a stolen car on a search for his long-lost brother. Zooey Deschanel plays Kate, the vehicle's peculiar owner, who joins the quest via disjointed cell-phone conversations. Though Hynes' script occasionally veers into semi-precious dialogue, Mercer and Kate's remote relationship builds philosophical and emotional depth over the course of the journey. This surprisingly tender film is complemented by M. Ward's whimsical soundtrack — which in turn led to the formation of She & Him, Ward's musical collaboration with Deschanel.
