Adapted from writer Blake Morrison's 1993 memoir about his bullying father's death from cancer, When Did You Last See Your Father? tackles potentially maudlin material with a refreshingly dry British eye. The trick lies in how the film renders all its major players as flawed but sympathetic, both perpetrators and victims. As Morrison's father, a philandering, bombastic Yorkshire doctor, Jim Broadbent takes obvious pleasure in channeling his character's bluster without dehumanizing him; as Morrison himself, Colin Firth (whose crumpled features really do resemble Broadbent's) proves both sympathetic and surly. By the conclusion, an uncanny, metaphysical calm settles in that's not often achieved onscreen.
