Summerworks 2008, Clubbed Thumb's 13th annual festival of new plays, starts with the raucous Constitutional Convention on June 4, a free opening-night bash at which artists propose new legislation that the audience can vote for or against. The festival pairs playwrights and directors in three hilarious productions at the Ohio Theatre: Ann Marie Healy's Gentleman Caller has an aging ingénue, a failed go-getter, and a maid with big dreams all waiting for a man to return from battle; Sally Oswald's Vendetta Chrome features a Victorian student discovering her dance moves; and Obie-winner Robert O'Hara directs Sigrid Gilmer's Slavey, a dark, futuristic comedy about a social-climbing couple and their brand-new indentured servant.
