Anthology Film Archives says…

Christopher Maclaine's manic films reflect his short, tragic life — addicted to speed and meth, the lesser-known beat poet died at the age of 51 in an asylum. The few films he left behind pioneered the ruptured narrative and choppy, rapid-fire imagery that subsequent avant-garde luminary Stan Brackhage is known for. Maclaine's apocalyptic magnum opus, The End, is his longest film, clocking in at 35 minutes and composed of six sections that follow as many characters during the last days of their lives. The Man Who Invented Gold is a rhapsodic, jarring ode to the alchemy of film that, despite being decidedly avant-garde, remains grounded in Maclaine's earnest expressiveness.
