Landmark Sunshine says…

Roman Polanski opens his dad-may-be-the-devil classic with a lugubrious lullaby and a pan across Manhattan's gloomy skyline. Within a few frames, the director establishes the film's unsettling world, where coded portents are revealed in every scene. A Twiggy-like Mia Farrow plays Rosemary, the wide-eyed half of an "ideal" couple living in the legendary Dakota building; John Cassavetes stars as her struggling-actor spouse who, to attain fame on Broadway, makes a disturbing Faustian deal using his wife as collateral. Polanski skillfully obscures the line between reality and paranoia, cranking up the anxiety and dread until you're left with a sense that no one can be counted on.
