Film The Exiles (1961)

Originally released to much ballyhoo at the 1961 Venice Film Festival, The Exiles has sunk into an undeserved oblivion over the last four decades. In some respects, it is very much an avant-garde film of its time — the story slowly, surely emerges from a sea of black-and-white images of cruising cars and grocery stores and neon nights that wash over you in a reverie of conversational fragments. But these images are of three young Native Americans who've left their reservation to join mainstream California, and the story that emerges is, sadly, a still-relevant catalog of their uneasy relationship with the people who rendered them "minorities" in their own land.
