Performing Arts: Theatre Twelve Ophelias

Twelve Ophelias picks up where Hamlet left off: Ophelia re-emerges from the water after her suicidal drowning and sets off to overcome the past and reshape her identity. McCarren Park Pool is transformed into an Appalachian shantytown overrun with familiar characters, all of whom have also assumed new identities. (Gertrude is a brothel madame and Hamlet goes by "Rude Boy.") Playwright Caridad Svich splices her own script with Shakespeare's original prose while mocking his storyline, toying with the play's conceits and turning them upside down. Bluegrass group the Jones Street Boys perform a live, original down-home soundtrack.
