Film Sakuran and Red Light Party

Mika Ninagawa's debut feature, Sakuran plays like a rock 'n roll Memoirs of a Geisha with a bigger wardrobe budget. The film's certainly guilty of prioritizing style over substance — but given Ninagawa's rep as one of Japan's best art photographers, and the fact that Sakuran is based on best-selling manga about a smokin'-hot courtesan with a bad attitude, we don't really mind. Now that Japan is better known for its kogal than kabuki, it shouldn't shock anyone that this eye-popping take on 18th-century prostitution forsakes authenticity for teal eyeliner and zebra-striped silks.
