The recently opened Gallery Nine5 in Nolita presents photographs by Gerald Dearing, who was born in Normandy as WWII raged around him. He immigrated to the United States in the '70s, but because he still considers himself a foreigner — his daughter describes him as "very French" — he enjoys an intimate yet detached perspective on American culture. Indivisible is a meditation on the country's flag: a graphic found on dime-store postcards, hats, and mugs that also contains an entire history. In large-format prints, the stars and stripes are encased in ice and then straightforwardly shot with the vivid color and grainy black-and-white of Polaroid film.
