Film Felon

Muscular and smart, Felon takes a long, hard look at many men's worst fear — incarceration — and actually comes up with something new to say about it. Based on true events in the California prison system, the film focuses on a building contractor (Stephen Dorff) who, upon being convicted for killing a burglar on his property, is thrown into the kill-or-be-killed ethos of the prison yard, while his fiancée and their child struggle at home. No one would accuse this drama of shedding new insight on prison race relations (nearly all the film's sympathetic characters are white), but it does tautly inspect the tensions that fuel male dynamics on both sides of the barbed wire.
