Film Take

Take begins with two close-ups: that of Ana (Minnie Driver), her face drawn and mouth grim; and Saul (Jeremy Renner), wearing handcuffs, his eyes clouded. The camera pulls back in a pan that essentially lasts for the entire film, as we learn who these two were on the day that Saul killed Ana's son in a stick-up. It's a grim story about people accustomed to living on the edge of despair, and director Charles Oliver pulls no visual or editing punches as he tells it. But Renner and Driver's performances are strong enough to generate a significant amount of sympathy. The result is nothing short of a heartbreaker.
