Art Dara Friedman: Musical

The most frequent complaint about musicals is that the suspension of disbelief wears off as soon as someone breaks into song. It's implausible: most of us can't sing worth spit, and the only dance we know involves flailing spasmodic limbs and raunchy grinds. But for three weeks last fall, dozens of New Yorkers bore witnesses to nearly 100 public acts of song, spontaneously performed by ordinary-looking individuals day and night. These guerrilla singers were put to the task by Miami-based artist Dara Friedman, and tonight's 48-minute film, screened outdoors by the Hudson River, captures a number of these impromptu performers as well as the startled reactions of passersby.
