Reading Joyce Carol Oates

Living lit-legend Joyce Carol Oates reads from her latest novel, My Sister, My Love: The Intimate Story of Skyler Rampike, in Bryant Park today. The hulking, 576-page book (her 36th novel, not counting pseudonymous works) is based on the media circus surrounding the murder of JonBenét Ramsey. In Oates' fictionalized rendering of the ordeal, she criticizes our scandal-obsessed culture and the media that promulgates it, writing from the perspective of the dejected brother whose life has been devastated by rumors, deceit, and extremely bad parenting.
