Film: Documentary American Teen

The tired teen-movie genre is re-envisioned by Nanette Burstein in her documentary American Teen, which depicts the experiences of five high-school seniors in Warsaw, Indiana. American Teen demonstrates the ways true life departs from (and eerily mirrors) iconic movies like The Breakfast Club: the heartthrob crushes on the outsider; the untouchable popular girl has problems after all; and the jock is not only worshipped but harshly scrutinized. Burstein's camera witnesses disturbing acts of impulsive malignancy, but also their perpetrators' states of mind, alongside poignant moments like the opening of a college acceptance letter and the first date. American Teen's vicissitudes are heartbreaking, hilarious, and inspiring.
