Film: Festival BAM Animation Weekend

With Pixar's Wall-E pushing for a Best Picture Oscar bid this year, animation is really getting its spot in the sun. This weekend, BAM presents top picks from the 2007 Ottawa International Animation Festival, as well as independent shorts by students and professionals, as part of the Animation Block Party festival. Don't miss Sundance darling Juan Pablo Zaramella's Lapsus, a minimalist piece drawn in grayscale about a nun with sinister curiosity, or Luis Cook's award-winning The Pearce Sisters, a comically bleak tale of two decrepit spinsters. Other highlights include a slew of lesser-known experimental shorts, such as Tobias Stretch's Illuminant, a psychedelic stop-motion film created from nearly 4,000 photographs.

Note: Animation Block Party also screens new shorts on Friday, July 25, at Automotive High School, as part of the Rooftop Films series.
