Film: Documentary The Order of Myths (2008)

Taking its title from the name of an actual Mobile, Alabama, secret society, The Order of Myths eyeballs that town's still-racially segregated Mardi Gras tradition with an unusually cool head for such a hot topic. Writer/director Margaret Brown (Be Here to Love Me, 2004) hails from Mobile, and uses her insider status to coax both white and black citizens to speak candidly about her hometown's attachments to its traditions — including segregation — and how the legacy of slavery still defines them. The resulting documentary may not always go far enough, but it manages, with a bold and generous specificity, to articulate questions that continue to haunt this country but are too rarely acknowledged.
